What are the pros and cons of developing our own Web site?

Of course, many people feel that they can do the job cheaper, they may be right. The problem is that there is a learning curve for creating and maintaining web sites that look clean and professional.

Will we need to know html code to maintain our site?

A working knowledge of HTML is necessary to create and to maintain web sites, even with the state of the art tools you will still need to change the raw HTML code on occasion.

<Back to top>

How it will be maintained?

You as a client, can send an e-mail containing a request to change specific text or images to use to update your web site. You can request additional pages to be added to your site as well. The price for these changes is dependent on whether you are on the current size of your site and whether you are on the optional maintenance plan.

What additional software would be needed?

The minimum software required to design and maintain your own web site is a text editor such as "notepad" to enter raw HTML; a browser such as Netscape Navigator to view the pages as you work on them; a ftp client such as WS_FTP LE to transfer the files from your development PC to your hosting web server. You may purchase tools that will combine any or all of these minimum programs, the price of this software ranges from a little over $100 to over $300. A working knowledge of HTML is still required even with these advanced tools.

How easy will it be to post changes?

With Captain Spider, updates can be done as often as 6 times a month, depending on the maintenance plan you are on. We typically have the requested changes out within 48 hours.

How are changes in structure of the Web site made?

That would be dependent on what you mean by "changes in structure". If you have an idea on what changes you will want to make latter in the web sites life prior to the original design, we may be able to design the site to make these changes easier.

What kind of input can we be expected to give in the design and features of our Web Site?

Captain Spider will take all the input from you we can. It is our belief that your web site reflects you, so we will try to gather as much information on what your business is, what you are trying to accomplish with your site and where you envision your business going in the future. You will have the final approval on the design.

What time frame can we expect completion?

The time frame depends on the complexity of your site and our current workload. Typically an intermediate site takes about 4-6 weeks. We turned out a Personal site in less than 6 hours for a client that started to design their own site. At 9:30 the evening before the site was to be announced, we were asked to redesign it. They were able to announce the site on a 7:30 AM radio interview the next morning! However we do appreciate a little more lead time than that. :-)

What if I decide I need to upgrade to a larger site?

If within the first 12 months you decide that your Captain Spider web site is too small, we will reduce the price of your new web site by the amount that you paid for the basic design price of your current site. For example, ten months ago you purchased a Captain Spider Personal Web Site solution for $335. Added a "hits" counter and some extra photos for an additional $72. Now you are bumping the limits of the Personal Web Site and decide that you want to upgrade to the Intermediate Web Site, we will reduce the $845 price of the basic design by the $335 that you spent on the Personal Web Site and the added features will carry over to the new site.

What does "hosting" mean?

To have your web site available to your potential customers that are surfing the web you need to have it on a computer that is connected to the World Wide Web or Web. This computer needs to have a software program or programs known as a web server that can allow access to the files that make up your web site when ever a user requests access. Your "hosting" computer should be on and connected to the Web 24 hours a day, 7 days a week (sometimes servers will go down for normal maintenance in the middle of the night or have technical problems)

I have never used Microsoft Front Page personally, but Microsoft has a help page on their web site. The link is Publish files and folders to an FTP server
